Is Aluminium Pressure Cooker Bad For Health?

We have seen pressure cookers used in every household. Pressure cookers are time-saving and generally a one-stop solution for all your cooking needs. They also easily guarantee perfectly cooked food. However, there are certainly repercussions associated with the use of pressure cookers. Some of them include the pressure cooker exploding and injuring the person using it. However, pressure cookers are relatively safe and have many safety features.

The principle of cooking with pressure cookers is that they use a low temperature and high steam to cook the food. For example, if you are cooking vegetables, it takes water to cook meat. Similarly, you can adjust the water amount as well. If the food remains hard, add more water and cook it under pressure. The pressure created is made at a low temperature that makes the steam from the boiling water. This steam causes the food to be cooked from all sides and is made soft easily; therefore, the food in the pressure cooker, i.e., is made from the trapped high-pressure steam at low temperatures. The food made in a pressure cooker is also generally moist and juicier due to its water and steam content.

They are ideal to use if you have just returned from a tiring day at the office or any other errand and want to ensure you do not spend much time in the kitchen. This will help you get a perfectly cooked meal at the end of the day and reduce your cooking time significantly.

Is Aluminium Pressure Cooker Bad For Health?

Aluminum Pressure Cookers are not bad for health because all modern cookers are coated with non-reactive materials such as anodized aluminum or stainless steel, which prevent aluminum leaching. These coatings can make the cookware safe for cooking various foods, including acidic ones.

The safety of using an aluminum pressure cooker for cooking and food preparation is controversial. Some experts believe that cooking acidic foods, such as tomatoes, in aluminum cookware can cause the metal to leach into the food, potentially leading to health concerns.

It is recommended that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions and guidelines for using aluminum pressure cookers and regularly inspect the cookware for any signs of damage or wear that could affect its safety. If in doubt, choosing a different type of cookware may be best.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), many consume over 50 milligrams of aluminum, which is not harmful to the human body. But, a way to prevent too much consumption is to avoid using worn-out cookers or scrapping the inner layer of the aluminum pressure cookers.

In my opinion, the pressure cooker is safe for cooking. For example, in the research paper STUDIES ON FURAN FORMATION IN FOODS PREPARED IN DOMESTIC PRESSURE COOKER, we can read that “the cooking in a domestic pressure cooker may not represent a concern about the occurrence of furan in foods.” Furan, a human carcinogen chemical, has been reported in canned and jarred foods at 173 μ g/kg concentrations. However, recent studies show that pressure cookers are safe.

When cooking food in pressure cookers, it may not be advised to consume it all the time. Pressure cookers cook meals in very high heat, causing loss of some nutrients in food and in cases where meat is overcooked.

What Are The Disadvantages Of Pressure Cooking?

As much as pressure cookers are the saving Grace of many individuals, there are some downsides.

  • Pressure cookers may save time but are very technical and can be challenging to use at first.
  • Pressure cookers cost much more than regular pots; this is an issue for many.
  • When in use, pressure cookers may not be opened until the cooking process is done. This does not allow for constant meal checking or the addition of seasoning while cooking.
  • Pressure cookers are very intense and could lead to overcooked meals.
  • Not all meals can be cooked with pressure cookers. Rice, beans, meat, potatoes, and other foods are typical ones.
